Why Basic Strategy Matters

Basic strategy is the mathematically optimal way to play every possible blackjack hand based on your cards and the dealers upcard. By following basic strategy perfectly, you can reduce the house edge from around 2-4% (for average players) to approximately 0.5%. This makes blackjack one of the best games in the casino for skilled players.

The strategy was developed using computer simulations that played millions of hands to determine the best decision for every situation. While it will not guarantee you win every hand, it ensures you make the statistically best choice every time.

Hard Hand Strategy

A hard hand is any hand without an Ace, or with an Ace counted as 1. Here are the key rules for hard hands:

8 or less: Always hit
9: Double against dealer 3-6, otherwise hit
10: Double against dealer 2-9, otherwise hit
11: Double against dealer 2-10, hit against Ace
12: Stand against dealer 4-6, otherwise hit
13-16: Stand against dealer 2-6, otherwise hit
17+: Always stand

Soft Hand Strategy

A soft hand contains an Ace counted as 11. These hands are more flexible because you cannot bust by taking one card:

Soft 13-14: Double against dealer 5-6, otherwise hit
Soft 15-16: Double against dealer 4-6, otherwise hit
Soft 17: Double against dealer 3-6, otherwise hit
Soft 18: Double against dealer 3-6, stand against 2, 7, 8, hit against 9, 10, A
Soft 19-20: Always stand

Splitting Pairs

When dealt two cards of the same value, you can split them into two hands:

Always split: Aces and 8s
Never split: 10s and 5s
Split 2s, 3s: Against dealer 2-7
Split 4s: Against dealer 5-6 only
Split 6s: Against dealer 2-6
Split 7s: Against dealer 2-7
Split 9s: Against dealer 2-6, 8-9 (stand against 7, 10, A)

Additional Tips

Never take insurance or even money. Always look for tables that pay 3:2 for blackjack rather than 6:5. A basic strategy card is legal to use at the table. Practice online before playing for real money. Find tables where the dealer stands on soft 17 rather than hits. The fewer decks in play, the better for the player.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Standing on soft 17 instead of hitting. Taking insurance even when it seems like a good deal. Splitting 10s because you want two hands. Standing on 12 against a dealers 2 or 3. Playing on tables that pay 6:5 for blackjack. Deviating from basic strategy based on hunches or patterns.
